Custom Iron continues to expand attention on innovative spiral staircase designs built for a range of residential, multi-family, and light commercial settings. Produced at the company’s facility in Zumbrota, Minnesota, the current lineup includes standard models that can be tailored by dimension, handrail profile, baluster style, tread surface, and finish. Each staircase is designed to conserve floor space while meeting code requirements for interior and exterior use.
The collection spans traditional and contemporary looks. The D100 Old Faithful features an ornamental handrail with a vertical volute and square vertical balusters, with optional upgrades such as round, hammered, or twisted mid balusters. The D105 Wildwood pairs a metal structure with a solid wood handrail, commonly shown with a 6010 oak profile, and can include wood tread and platform covers in additional species. The D124 New Faithful keeps square vertical balusters while introducing a 1-1/2-inch round handrail with a welded dome endcap.
The D154 Greenwich Jazz uses flowing horizontal lines created by round tubes that continue into a vertical end post. The D156 Cablerail Spiral combines square posts, a round handrail, and stainless steel cables for an open appearance suited to both indoor and outdoor installations. The D224 Monterey Bay presents a contemporary profile with a round handrail and round vertical balusters. The D500 Expression uses a smooth flat handrail and square main balusters, with interchangeable laser-cut panel options such as Bamboo, Botanical, Champagne, Flourish, Fracture, Greenwich, Patriot, and Waterford.
These designs support applications that include loft access, basement connections, lake homes and cabins, mezzanines, second-story additions, deck-to-patio access, rooftop terraces, and secondary exits. Exterior models can be built in aluminum with protective powder-coated finishes intended to withstand rain, snow, and seasonal temperature changes.
Interior models are designed for compact footprints where a conventional stair run would consume too much space. Tread options include checkerplate and other surfaces selected to match traffic and style needs. Handrails are formed to follow the curve of each staircase so on-site reshaping is not required.
The production process begins with consultation on project goals, site measurements, style preferences, and code considerations. Designers then prepare CAD drawings and shop plans before each staircase is built in Minnesota. After assembly at the facility, the staircase is taken apart into smaller sections for shipping. Two-page instructions guide reassembly, which is typically completed by two people in a few hours without on-site cutting, drilling, or welding.
